Are you getting this error message when trying to connect to a shiny new instance of SQL 2005 Express?
"An error has occurred while establishing connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)"
First try all the steps listed here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277
Still not working? Try this:
- Open SQL Server Configuration Manager
- Select "Protocols For SQLEXPRESS"
- Right-click the TCP/IP (make sure it is Enabled) and click Properties
- Select the IP Addresses tab
- If you have something like 63207 in the TCP Dynamic Ports field, delete it
- The standard port for SQL Server is 1433, so put that in the TCP Port field.
- Apply. OK. Restart the SQL Server 2005 Express service
